Modalverben sind meistens unterstützende Hilfsverben. Sie drücken einen Wunsch, einen Willen, eine Absicht, eine Möglichkeit, eine Pflicht oder einen Zwang aus. Modalverben stehen in der Regel in Kombination mit einem anderen Verb, um dessen Bedeutung zu präzisieren oder zu verändern.
Die DSGS kennt folgende lexikalisierte Modalverben:
(a) MÜSSEN – 00:17
‘muss’
(b) KÖNNEN – 00:19
‘kann’
(c) DÜRFEN – 00:21-00:22
‘darf’
(d) WOLLEN (3 Varianten) – 00:26-00:29
‘will’
(e) SOLLEN – 00:31-00:32
‘soll’
(f) MÖCHTEN – 00:34-00:35
‘möchte’
‘Möchten’ wird oft ohne, kann aber auch mit Mundbild gebärdet werden:
(g) MÖCHTEN ohne und mit Mundbild – 00:38-o0:41
‘möchte’
Bei den restlichen Modalverben ist ein begleitendes Mundbild in der Regel obligatorisch. Es steht meistens in der 1. Person Singular. In einem Satz zum Beispiel, der "wir alle können" bedeutet, lautet das begleitende Mundbild ‘darf’.
