Singular und Plural unterscheiden sich in der Regel durch die Bewegungsausführung des Index. Während beim Singular einmal oder zweimal kurz auf den/die Referent:in gezeigt wird, führt der Zeigefinger beim Plural eine Bogen- beziehungsweise Kreisbewegung aus.
Ein/e Pluralreferent:in (z.B. die Kinder) kann aber beim zweitmaligen Bezug auch mit einer Singularform (die Gruppe von Kindern) indexiert werden, wie folgendes Beispiel zeigt:

‘Die Kinder haben heute Schule. Morgen gehen sie in die Ferien.’
Aus mehreren Einzelelementen im Plural (z.B. die Kinder) wurde eine Menge gebildet (die Gruppe der Kinder), welche nun im Singular steht. Aufgrund ihrer Position im Gebärdenraum ist sie eindeutig identifizierbar.
