Die Frage nach dem ‘wo?’ wird durch die Gebärde ‘PALM-UP(?)’ mit Mundbild ‘wo’ ausgedrückt. Sie steht nicht allein; sie ist immer an einen Ort gebunden und wird daher gefolgt von einer Verortung im Raum (siehe Kapitel 2) beziehungsweise einer Indexierung auf eine solche. Einige Beispiele möglicher Verortungen im Raum:

Eine Frage nach dem ‘wo?’ könnte zum Beispiel folgendermassen aussehen:

Die Gebärde ‘WO?’ wird also gefolgt von einer Verortung im Raum. Das Zuweisen eines solch symbolischen Raums hat grammatikalische Bedeutung. Er kann die tatsächlichen räumlichen Gegebenheiten spiegeln (wie im Falle des Körpers), muss dies aber nicht.
